the Flexible City

Considering that actual modifications in social and economic contexts take place in hurry motion, is essential an immediate adaptation to the civitas (a company who lives in urbs) and  the polis (city government and institutional).

It is necessary that the material component of the city must adapt to the needs of the citiziens and, as a consequence, to think about cities and territories as flexible environments.

The problem is:  can the liquid society shape the structure and form of the city?

Flexibility is the adaptation to the social and economic conditions, the ability of the city to be efficient in a short time according to the demands of the context.

The Flexible City presents 5 basic characteristics :

1. Temporal Dimension

Different temporal domains

Different anthropological permanences

2. Variable Geography

Shape and dimensions changes

Structural dimension is fixed

Change adaptation

3. Reversibility

Expansion/ contraction of the city

Sustainablility choices

Ri-naturalization of urban areas

Life Cycle assessment of the city

4. Functional Un-differentiation

Adaptation of urban functions

Increase/ reduce the urban load

Not compromised the infrastructure system

5. Layer Structure

Third dimensions of layers

Different functional layers

6. Ethero - Organization

starting from general rules, it is the resulty

of a spontaneous urban method.
