Eight Principles for better streets and better cities

ITDP aims to deliver a higher standard of living and quality of life for citizens of cities around the world. Our vision of sustainable cities is one in which there is a high concentration of people living in an environment that is pleasant and provides good social infrastructure through good physical infrastructure. Cities where people are put before cars, and residents, workers and visitors young and old, can safely walk or cycle to their daily activities. Cities where jobs and services are a bus ride away, and the time and money spent driving can be used productively elsewhere. To achieve this, there are 8 principles which guide our approach to sustainable transport and development.

1. WALK | Develop neighborhoods that promote walking

2. CYCLE | Prioritize non-motorized transport networks

3. CONNECT | Create dense networks of streets and paths

4. TRANSIT | Locate development near high-quality public transport

5. MIX | Plan for mixed use

6. DENSIFY | Optimize density and transit capacity

7. COMPACT | Create regions with short commutes

8. SHIFT | Increase mobility by regulating parking and road use

La Défense Transporte Hub, Paris

La Défense is a major business district of the Paris Metropolitan Area and of the Île-de-France region, located in the commune of Courbevoie, and parts of Puteaux and Nanterre, just west of the city of Paris.

La Défense transport hub integrates high-speed railway, metro, freeway and normal urban road as high comprehensive and vertical traffic complex. In 2002, there were 17, 540, 000 person-time to take M1 line in La Défense transport hub, and 29, 720, 000 to RER-A line. Considering other transport systems integrated in, the efficient hub could ensure 400, 000 person-time to transfer various vehicles, and the underground transport systems could also ensure a safely environment for overground pedestrians.
